Franz Rudolph Wurlitzer founded the company in 1853 in Cincinnati, Ohio, beginning with imports before launching domestic piano production in 1880. The firm expanded into coin-operated player pianos by 1900 and became famous for theater organs. In 1935, they introduced the popular 39-inch spinet piano. Electric piano production occurred from 1954 to 1983, with the Baldwin Piano & Organ Company acquiring the name in 1995.
