What is the Main Difference between the Spinet and other upright pianos?

The hammers are the same size in ALL 4 piano styles.  The Spinet Piano keys will PULL up the hammers to strike the strings.  In the larger pianos, the keys will PUSH up the hammers to strike the strings.

Because the soundboard of a Spinet is the shortest of the piano family, the ‘hammer action’ is lowered to fit inside the piano and therefore the hammers need to be leveraged differently than they are in the larger brothers.

Cross Section of Upright Pianos

Notice, all the hammers are the same size, but it's where they are placed in relation to the size of the soundboard making the difference being the spinet keys PULL up the hammer action while the others PUSH up the action hammers.

  • A very easy and smooth purchase from Jay. He is very knowledgeable about the piano world and the buying experience was more than amazing. He wrapped the piano perfectly and arrived on time with the right equipment to move the piano safely, we then chose the spot and he played something very nice as to introduce the piano to the home. He is the guy you need in the Colorado area!

  • I am thrilled with the piano I got from Jay!!! He was very helpful with me over the phone and answered all my questions patiently. you see it had been 45 years since I had played the piano and decided that I wanted to play again. Jay delivered the piano of my dreams 500 miles up to Cody, Wyoming in a blinding snow storm. That was above and beyond the call...He is the nicest and most talented person I have ever met and we hope that he will come back this summer for a longer visit...He is the BEST!!!

  • Jay has been amazing to work with at our lesson studio. He took some of our highly used pianos off our hands, and we were able to upgrade another piano at a great price! His delivery team was easy to work with, and we are very happy with all our interactions with Jay and the Pianos for Humanity team. Thank you!

  • Jay from Pianos for Humanity clearly loves what he does. I've been thinking about getting a piano for months and then saw one that he had restored and tuned and he offers delivery for free. He is very responsive and clearly takes pride in his work. In these times where we are self-distancing for an unknown length of time, it's very uplifting to be able to have music in our house. Thank you Jay.

  • Absolutely DO NOT hire "Pianos for Humanity" or anyone associated with "Jay" for any piano-related services. This was, without a doubt, the worst experience I’ve ever had with any service provider, and it resulted in significant damage to both my home and a beautiful vintage instrument. I acquired a 64-year-old Yamaha piano from FB and foolishly contacted Pianos for Humanity for moving, cleaning, and tuning, based on a $600 quote. What I got was a complete and utter disaster. “Professional” is the last word I would use to describe this operation. It was essentially one mover plus Jay, who is not a mover, with a truck, and zero expertise. The first red flag should have been when they asked me to help move the piano. Then, Jay had the audacity to ask me to call my friends to find another person to assist! This was during a workday, so obviously, I couldn't find anyone. Despite sending photos of my narrow staircase in advance, upon arrival, Jay put on an act and suggested I just give him the Yamaha and take one of his smaller spinets instead! This should have been my cue to cancel everything, but I unfortunately I didn't. The "move" itself was a horrifying display of incompetence. I nearly got crushed between the piano and the wall due to their complete lack of technique. The result? A hole punched in my wall, gouges all over my stairwell walls, and the once pristine Yamaha now bears numerous scratches and chips. They also scratched my hardwood floors from dragging the metal piano wheels, stained my white baseboards beige after dropping a wood stain bottle, and then, to add insult to injury, slicked up my floor with WD-40 leaking from his bag! And for this carnage, they still had the nerve to charge me the full $600! "Jay" calls himself "the piano man," but he demonstrated zero respect for this beautiful piece of history. He is hostile, unprofessional, and utterly clueless about proper piano handling. Please, please, PLEASE avoid "Pianos for Humanity" and "Jay" at all costs. Even if you're considering buying a piano from him, I implore you to hire a reputable, professional moving company. I doubt he would show any regards for the instruments once a sale is made. This experience was a nightmare from start to finish, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
